Urban Beekeeping
There’s quite a bit of *buzzzzz* around urban beekeeping. Just do a little searching and you will see that there are several bee-ginning (pardon the puns) beekeeping classes at places like the Chicago Honey Co-op and the Garfield Park Conservatory. The City of Chicago even has it’s own beehives that sit atop the Chicago Cultural Center!
Honey bees are disappearing all over the United States, a result of environmental imbalance. Honeybees are responsible for pollinating the vast majority of edible plants. It is estimated that 100,000 species of plants would become extinct without honeybees to pollinate them.
By utilizing smaller scale colonies, the benefits are two fold. We can obtain honey and beeswax in less industrialized ways while increasing the honey bee population and pollinating urban gardens.
