Be solar inspired! View renewable energy systems in action! The Illinois Solar Tour is a FREE self-guided, statewide event that demonstrates how Illinois homes and businesses are using solar, wind, geothermal, passive solar design, and energy efficiency to become energy independent.

Renewable energy system owners and installers will be providing tours TOMORROW Saturday, October 1st from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tour guides will answer questions on how you can harness the power of the sun and wind to fuel your home and business. Learn how you too can reduce your monthly utility bills, increase property values, and be part of the energy solution.

  • City of Chicago passed the Urban Agriculture ordinance was passed by City Council on Thursday, September 8th.
  • Evanston Food Council member, Debbie Hillman, Cook County is conducting a survey on its food system and food issues, through the Cook County Department of Public Health. This survey is open to all Cook County residents, and will be open to participate in until the *September 29 deadline*. Following this deadline, there will be a public meeting held on *October 6, 2011*. Seventh Annual Corks & Crayons Benefit

Purple Asparagus, the non-profit that educates children, families and the community about eating that’s good for the body and the planet, will host its Seventh Annual Corks & Crayons Benefit at Uncommon Ground, 1401 W Devon Ave, Chicago, on Saturday, August 28, 2011 from 4-7 p.m. The family-friendly event that brings foodies old and young together to celebrate the joys of family meals and healthy eating all for a good cause.

The event will include a mini farmers’ market sponsored by Harvest Moon Organics farm, music from Old Town School of Folk Music artists, a raffle, and a silent auction for bidding on gourmet treats, getaways, and more. Guests will enjoy selections from Uncommon Ground’s kitchen and Candid Wines. Attendees will also be able to tour the certified-organic green roof atop Uncommon Ground where the restaurant grows some of the produce on its menu. Angelic Organics Learning Center’s August and September Events!

 In 1999, Angelic Organics Learning Center was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization and a partner to Angelic Organics farm.  Their On-Farm Initiative offers hands-on learning at Angelic Organics Farm where they engage the body, heart and mind to experience life on a vibrant working farm. They offer farm tours, skills workshops and custom learning opportunities for individuals, families, schools and community groups. Workshops offered include beekeeping, composting, cheesemaking, a variety of summer day camps for kids and many more.  Be sure to check out their August and September events listed below!

Pre-Planning Workshop for a FoodSpace Plan

This workshop will bring together city agencies, community and civic groups with an interest in food systems at the neighborhood and city level. 

  • Heather Wooten, senior planning and policy associate with Public Health Law and Policy, will provide an overview on how other cities across the country are measuring food access, providing planning tools for neighborhood groups and developing citywide plans and policies for food systems.
  • The City will provide an update on current efforts and tools to measure food access.
  • Possible topic areas to be addressed in a FoodSpace Plan will be discussed with attendees to determine if any issues are missing and how to structure a process of stakeholder engagement.
